March 20th – 26th: Wheaton

Another week gone here in Wheaton. Training has been a rocky road this week with a few niggling injuries popping up. Still able to be productive in various ways. My coaching job has also settled into rhythm which is nice, just still waiting on my first paycheck.

This week, a former team mate of mine from New Zealand joined us in the apartment and training with Bridges. Its been great having a familiar face around and a lot of catching up to do after 5 years since we last played together.

March madness finally IMG_5584meant something to me for once being a Quinnipiac alum. Our Women’s Basketball team took the whole Quinnipiac Community on a great ride all the way to the Sweet 16. It was an incredible and inspiring journey they went on, and I was happy to go along for the ride. They have certainly put Quinnipiac on the map! Unfortunately the journey ended in the Sweet 16, but the standard has now been set and I’m sure it wont be too long until they get there again!

My weekend was filled with Family. My cousin Jeremy was in Chicago visiting his girlfriend and I was lucky enough to head along to dinner with them on Saturday evening. And Sunday afternoon I had lunch with Mum’s cousin and her husband. It was great to see familiar faces and escape from the apartment for awhile. That is just the beginning of my family visits hopefully!

March 13th – March 19th: Wheaton, IL

IMG_5577I am certainly now settled in Wheaton, Illinois. My second week here has passed and I have begun to find a bit of a rhythm. I am more comfortable and more focused on the task ahead of me. After having a couple conversations with the assistant coach this week, I have a clearer picture of a few areas of my game that I really need to focus on. I put extra time into these areas before training, during training and also in the gym back at the apartment. As previously stated, I will get out of this experience what I put into it, and I have full control of my effort. So I am making sure I put in the work required, and more, to build a strong platform for future opportunities that I hope will arise.

Thankfully, Bridges has assisted in finding me some work through the connections and relationships they have with the local training facility. So I began coaching this week, and in a few weeks will hopefully pick up another job related to soccer too. This will certainly help to keep me busy, but also cover my costs of putting food on the table for myself. Once again, I have found myself never too far away from friends, as a former classmate and fellow student athlete from Quinnipiac lives not too far from Wheaton. We were able to catch up one evening which was great. On Saturday evening, myself and three of the other guys enjoyed a nice evening at a nice restaurant/bar. Good food, good company, and lots of sports on TV, especially with March Madness. IMG_5578

Sunday rolled around and it dawned a lovely day. Blue skies, and warm sun, so perfect for me to get back into my Sunday run routine. I was able to explore the streets fairly nearby, however I took a wrong turn from my planned route. It was well worth it either way. I returned and did a few extra exercises in the gym and spent some time out on the deck in the lovely weather. Sadly, my Sunday took a devastating turn. As many of you may know, I spent 2 months training full time with Derry City FC in June and July of 2016. During that time, I got to know all the players and staff, and some of the die hard fans. Today, I was once again reminded of how fragile life can be. Club Captain, Ryan McBride had passed away in his home in Derry, less than 24hrs after leading Derry to a 4-0 victory. During my two months at DCFC he was someone who I looked up to, for his leadership, professionalism, and his passion. He wore his heart on his sleeve, he held everyone to high expectations, and he brought the best out of players. I have very positive memories to look back on when I reflect on my time spent with DCFC and Ryan. I feel for all the boys there currently going through this tough time, but I know that the culture that has been developed at the club, largely thanks to Ryan, will strengthen them and pull them through this difficult time. Life is fragile, embrace opportunities when they come, and let people impact you for the better. Forever thankful for my time at Derry City FC and to know such an incredible man. 17265043_10155812158973906_4455712874586712649_n

March 6th – 12th: Philadelphia – Chicago

IMG_5566Well this week has involved a massive step or progression in my development towards my goal of becoming a professional. On Monday I flew to Chicago where I was picked up by two future team mates. I have linked up with an organization called Bridges FC. The name speaks for itself really. Their aim is to help players build the bridges required to become professional players. Firstly they give players a full time training environment where one can develop their game and learn from experienced coaches. If the players are of a certain quality, they’re given opportunity to trial with various levels of professional and semi professional teams. And if a player is willing and able, they are given the opportunity to travel with the team to Europe for a tour where 8 odd games are played against professional teams across Scandinavia, with the intentions for these teams to offer trials or contracts to the players from Bridges. Bridges FC is also associated with Bridges Sports Management, who represent most players from Bridges that haIMG_5565.PNGve signed professionally with teams. So it is a well run organization, that is proven to be successful. But as I have already been told by the coaches, and also prior Bridges players, you will be as successful as you want to, all dependent on the work you put in leading up to the trip.

So for me, I will now be based in Wheaton, IL where I will train full time with Bridges. The training will become more focused when May comes around as the full traveling squad is established. The May-June period will be like a pre season as such as the team prepares for the trip, playing friendlies against many USL teams here in the USA, and then on July 1st the team will depart for Europe. Until May, training will mostly be inside, with a technical session for 90min in the morning and then 5v5 games for the afternoon session. The technical sessions are great to focus on areas of improvement, and then those improvements can be implemented in the games in the afternoon. The greatest thing that Bridges offers me is the willingness of the coaches to work with me and develop and progress my game, because as many know, once in the professional environment, development isn’t as important as winning. So being here in this educational environment will IMG_5564.PNGhopefully build my platform higher for when we travel to Europe and I can kick on from there. For now, the focus is not Europe. The focus is working on different areas of my game each day, and even in the first week, I have already began developing areas of my game that the coaches believe need improving and I can already see a difference.

I can say, finally I am in the perfect environment for this stage of my career, as it will truly prepare me for what is to come if/when I become a professional player. My determination to improve and willingness to learn has thankfully continued through all the ups and downs of the last 9 months. Now I can settle into a routine and really focus on improving my game.

Being in Illinois also makes me very close to many family members, which will be great to catch up and see them across the next fews months. And I have already planned a trip back to Connecticut to visit people, now that I know where I am going to be for the next few months, it makes it a lot easier to visit. Things are certainly looking brighter finally 🙂

Feb 27th – March 5th: Philadelphia

View from the room of site

Monday began the first day of a working week for me. I was up before 6am to ensure I ate and had enough time navigate my way by bike to the construction site I would be working on. This continued for the whole week each morning. I was treated to a different sunrise every morning and very different weather conditions too. Some mornings it was warm and some mornings it was freezing. Either way, the bike got me to where I wanted to go! As for the construction work I was doing, I was a general labourer on a 6 story building that was being transformed from a warehouse to an apartment complex. As I was considered an unskilled worker, my responsibility was keeping the floors swept in the hallways and soon to be rooms, but also assist with any movement of materials and just generally keep things organized and tidy. It wasn’t the most thrilling job, but it kept me busy for a week and I shared some interesting stories with other workers on site. I would like to say that I made a difference in the week that I spent there.

I spent a couple evenings training with the local team or down at the gym to ensure that I kept ticking over and was ready for opportunities when they came, if they came. I also was fortunate enough to see another performance on Friday evening also, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime. It was an incredible show and really showed the difficulties and complexities a young boy had with autism, which translates across all ages and genders too. Understanding autism is a difficult thing, because every case is different, but just seeing how ones brain that is impacted by autism can process thoughts and emotions is a great learning experience.

IMG_5536On Saturday, both Anne and I headed to the gym to do our different types of training, and she was sporting a new outfit we have shopped for the previous week. After our workouts we headed down to Reading Terminal Market, which was suggested to me by a friend as a place to visit while I was in Philadelphia. It was a great place with all sorts of stores, mostly food and treats, but just the amount of people in the place was insane! An experience for sure.

Sunday was a day where things took a turn. After doing some research, things kind of fell into place a little bit and I was soon booking a flight to Chicago for Monday. Because of this, I spent most the day organizing all my things and repacking my life into my suitcase and carryon as I was about to embark on a new adventure. I will talk more about the opportunity the has arisen next week after I have begun the experience.

Feb 20th – Feb 26th: Philadelphia

IMG_5520.jpgAnother week passes, and unfortunately not much movement on my end. Although Monday saw the completion and distribution of my new video, the waiting game continues. While this goes on, I continued to train, getting to the gym everyday and varying my workouts to get fitness in but also strength and speed work. And on Friday, I was able to attend a team training session with the Philadelphia NPSL team, Junior Lone Star FC. It was great to get on the field again and do football specific training. Depending on their training schedule in the coming weeks, I will hope to attend them as much as possible to keep the football work up. IMG_5517.jpg

Unseasonably, the weather was quite impressive this week, when it really should be pretty cold considering it is on February. But I was able to wear shorts and jandals and sit in a park and read my book or people watch on both Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday, I was fortunate to catch up with my old team mate and house mate, Steven Hawkey from Quinnipiac. It had been close to 8months since we last saw each other, and so we had lots to catch up on. It was a wonderful evening with lots of catching up. As I continue to travel and grow older, it’s always nice to have friends never too far away!

Saturday was filled with errands and some shopping. Sunday was a lazy morning but the afternoon was wonderful. We attended the musical of The Bodyguard. It was quite amazinIMG_5517.jpgg, and considering I hadn’t seen the movie, it allowed me to just take it all in. I very much enjoyed it. Anne, Fred, and their friend Andrea, and I then head out for a late lunch at a nice Greek restaurant. It was just a great afternoon. After lunch, Fred drove me to one of his construction companies worksites that I would be working at beginning Monday. It will be a great way for me to keep busy and make some money while I play the waiting game. It will be a 5mile bike ride in the morning and afternoon. Should be a good week, and hopefully a little more movement on the football side of things.

Feb 13th – Feb 19th: Harrisburg – Philadelphia –

As I left off last week, I had just arrived in Harrisburg. The trial was over two days, indoors thankfully as temperatures were cold and it was windy. Over the course of the two days I felt like I performed very well, displaying most of the qualities in my play that I could. But once again there was a missing piece and I wasn’t invited for pre season, however I did get some valuable feedback from the head coach. On Tuesday, I took the train from Harrisburg to Philadelphia where I was met by my Aunt Anne. Anne, her partner Fred and I had a lovely meal and caught up, after only a short couple weeks since I was last in Philadelphia.

img_5503Wednesday I was able to rest and recover a little bit after the busy few days of travel and trials, and just have a bit of down time to reflect on things and really question my intentions about what I want to achieve. Thursday I went for a run along the Delaware river and it was nice to get out of the house. I also began to re make my video and edit my Football/Soccer CV in an effort to search for new opportunities, so that was taking a lot of time in my days. I had to cut through many hours of games and get clips from various games from this season and last. It was a tedious task, but it needed to be done in order for me to be seen by coaches and teams for new opportunities. This is the final product https://youtu.be/7cXtnit-HaQ

On Friday, Anne and I had a lovely dinner before we headed to the Merriam Theatre to watch a Brazilian performance of music and dance. It traced through different phases of their developing culture and reflected on the various influences that had an impact on them. It was quite the performance! On Saturday, we headed to the gym img_5504where I was able to get a good work out in, and Anne was able to continue to do her rehab and balance work. Never thought the day would come that we would go to a gym together!! In the afternoon, we headed up to Fred’s place. He was recently completed building an incredible mansion on the river north of Philadelphia. I saw it last when he was still building, so seeing it complete was quite incredible. He has yet to fully move things into it. We had a lovely meal and watched a great film, Meet Joe Black!

img_5509Sunday morning I picked up South Street Philly Bagels for breakfast, before Anne dropped me off just passed the Museum where the statue of Rocky is on the steps, and I walked along the river before I found a nice spot to read my book in the sun. The weather has been unseasonably warm, with Sundays temperature near 20 degrees celsius.

Feb 6th – Feb 12th: Myrtle Beach – Charleston – Harrisburg

IMG_5494.jpgAnother week that began in one place and ended in another. I was at Marcos’s in Myrtle Beach until Thursday. We continued to have a great time together, going for a run together, having salad nights, going bowling, and then on Wednesday, he took me to his new office as such at Coastal Carolina University. It was great to see how another University Athletic Department functions and the different facilities etc. It was a great experience and the campus is lovely, especially with the sun shining and it feeling a little more like summer. I was also able to watch a bit of the teams training, which was good. It is only Spring season so all they did was play, but even then you could see how differently the team was drilled.

On Thursday I headed down to Charleston by bus. Once again, a friend of mine img_5498organized for me to stay with her friend, and it worked out great. A couch was all I needed to rest my head at night and I was great. In the evening, Rachel, my host took her dog for a walk down on the Battery, downtown Charleston and I joined. Although it was dark, it was a lovely evening with the air crisp and the water splashing against the Battery. That was really as much of Charleston I got to see.

Friday was the first day of the trial at Charleston Battery. The Stadium was lovely, brillIMG_5499.jpgiant grass and great facilities. Over the course of the two days, I was pleased with my play and the impact I had in the games. However, I obviously wasn’t what the coaching staff were looking for and now I am waiting to receive feedback so that I know what I need to improve on to take the next step as a player. After the second day, I showered at the stadium and then headed to the airport to catch a flight to Newark. I was picked up by James Greco, another former teammate of mine from Quinnipiac University. It was great to catch up with him as we drove to his place. We spent the evening catching up, and then Sunday morning James, his Dad, and myself headed out in the freezing rain to a local high school to get the legs going and pass a ball around in preparation for the next tryout, which James was also attending. Although cold and wet, it was good to get the legs going and for me to adjust to the temperature as I was now back in the Northeast winter. Two more of our teammates from Quinnipiac met us at James’s house and we all jumped in the car and headed for Harrisburg, PA.

Monday would be the first day of the trial in Harrisburg, but it was nice to certainly be back together with some old teammates and we enjoyed ourselves for sure.

January 30th – February 5th: Richmond-Myrtle Beach

img_5465-2This week has been filled with training and spending time with my friend, Marcos. Before I left Richmond on Monday, I managed to get a run in and lose a cat at the same time. I did everything I could to get the cat back inside before I left, I was unsuccessful. I then took a bus from Richmond to Wilmington, North Carolina. In Wilmington I was picked up by a friend of mine, Lisa. We grabbed dinner in Wilmington and then hit the road south to Myrtle Beach. I spent the night at Lisa’s apartment and witnessed a gorgeous sunrise over the beach from 12 floors up. I got some beach time in as I got the lunges and legs going before I was picked up later that afternoon by Marcos, my former teammate and close friend from Quinnipiac.

img_5476I spent the rest of the week with Marcos, keeping busy constructing things for his apartment, touring Coastal Carolina University’s campus, going bowling, and just catching up. The weather has been very nice down here and so it has been nice to spend some time outside in the sun and by the pool. img_5474-2Each day I utilized the gym that is for the apartment complex and made sure that I got in the appropriate training each day to keep my fitness and strength up. And Sunday I was able to enjoy the fresh air on a nice long run too.

We also managed watched the Coastal Carolina men’s and women’s tennis games on Saturday. It was great to get out and watch some college sports again. After the tennis we took a walk down the boardwalk of Myrtle Beach. And the week was finished off with an incredible NFL Super Bowl. img_5483As much as I am not a fan of American Football, I think most sports fans would have enjoyed the intensity of the game and the incredible comeback by the New England Patriots. It was a great ending to the week, as I prepare for another big week of training and preparation for more upcoming trials.

On a side note, the sunsets have also been amazing each day as demonstrated by the pictures I have attached.

January 23rd-29th: Truro-London-Philadelphia-Richmond

So a surprise to many, I am writing this from a bus that is traveling from Richmond, Virginia to Wilmington, North Carolina. Yes, I have made it back to the United States safe and sound, and img_5445thankfully I have an American passport or I may not have been able to enter in the current state the country is in.
My week began as usual in Truro. On Monday and Tuesday I went to the gym, and then trained at Truro College. It wasn’t until Tuesday afternoon that I confirmed my departure from the club to return to the USA to pursue opportunities here. It was obviously very disappointing to have to leave Truro, but for the interests of my young career, I think it will be for the best. Tuesday evening I said my goodbyes and then took an overnight bus up to London, where I arrived early morning. I walked from the bus station to Buckingham Palace to say hello to Queen Elizabeth and then I met up with a friend who I hadn’t seen in 8 years. She now is living in London, so it was great to see her for a few hours before I left. I headed to Heathrow Airport via the tube and checked in smoothly. img_5448

I flew Air India from Heathrow to Newark, although we departed nearly 2hrs late, we weren’t too late arriving into Newark. Thanks to my US passport, as I walked through customs, I got a “welcome home” from the officer. Always makes me laugh! I then took the train from Newark to Philadelphia. At the station, I met a German man who was studying at University of Auckland back home in New Zealand, so we had a great conversation to pass time during the trip. I arrived into Philadelphia greeted by a big hug and a familiar face, my Aunt Anne. We headed home to drop my things off and then headed to dinner. It was lovely to be reunited with family and have nice conversation for dinner. After dinner, I re-organized my bags, as much of my stuff is stored at Anne’s from my time at University.

img_5449After a good sleep, I had a productive morning before I got on my next train to Richmond, Virginia. The ride wasn’t too bad and I was picked up from the station. When I knew that I was coming to Richmond, I reached out to friends who might know someone with a spare bed or couch, and the return was amazing. A wonderful family offered me to stay in a house that was vacant for the weekend as they were away. It was great to have my own space to relax in during the weekend, I just had to put up with two cats which wasn’t too bad. Friday morning I went for a morning run before I stocked up on groceries for the next few days before I relaxed until the afternoon.

The whole reason why returned was to pursue some opportunities with football here in the USA. The first one was an invite to a trial for the Richmond Kickers in the USL. As it goes in America, open tryouts, although being invited, can be up and down. There was obviously a stronger group of players that seemed to be seriously looked at, and thankfully I was in that group. Whether or not they liked me or not as a player was up to them. Over the course of the 3 days, there was a fair bit of football played, and I was pleased with my performance. In these situations, there is only so much you can do, and now it is in the hands of the Kickers staff. One surprise from the weekend was that of an old teammate of mine from back in NZ was there. James had gone to University in the States, however we had played together back in 2011 for Canterbury United when we won the National Youth League. It was good to catch up with him and play alongside him one again.

So it has been a hectic week for me, in pursuit of new opportunities and the week ahead will be an interesting one as well. For now it is back to training hard and catching up with my friend in Myrtle Beach!

January 16th – 22nd: Truro

This week started with a busy day in the kitchen, meal prepping for the next few days so that after trainings, I wouldn’t have to make food. I also whipped up a batch of chocolate chip cookies, always go down a treat.

img_5443I was in my regular training routine which has been great, especially training with the local college has been beneficial for both parties. I get extra technical training in, in an environment where development is the focus, so thats been great. I managed to get my regular sessions in at the gym too, and down at the local park as well, so it was a busy and productive training week for sure. Feeling as fit as I can be without playing 90min, which is now the focus for me. And on Friday, I enjoyed my yoga class as usual.

Little story of the week with a bit of drama on Thursday night. To get to training I had to get the bus from the caravan park into Truro to be picked up to then head up to Saltash for training. Zane was injured, so I headed down by myself to the bus early to make sure I caught one, and I took the exact amount that I would pay £2. The bus comes and I get on and say, “train station please”, for the driver to punch it in and say “thats £3 please”. Never, in the 3 months that I have been here has it been £3, and I told him that, but he punched it back in and it came back up as £3, so I took back my money and frustratingly walked back to the caravan, grabbed an extra pound, and headed back down to catch the next bus. Of course just as I was walking out of the caravan park, another bus came by, and I tried to wave it down in the dark to no avail. Frustration grew! Finally another bus came and I said the same thing, “train station please”, and the bus driver said, “thats £2 please”. I just had to laugh, and in my head, I had just saved a pound.

Saturday was game day and we were up early and on the bus by 8.30am. The longer we drove towards the pick up point for the other lads, the more games were getting called off for frozen pitches. It wasn’t until we got to Exeter, that we got word that it had been postponed, so we turned around and pretty much did a 5hr round trip bus ride for fun on Saturday morning. We got home and I headed down to the local park to get a good one hour session in to make sure my body still did the work needed and expected of on a game day. img_5442

Sunday was a great day. I woke up and headed out for my Sunday run. I had it in my head where I wanted to go, and I knew it was far, but I wanted to do it. So I ran to Perranporth and back. Approximately 16miles, 25.6km return. It was a massive long run, but I spent 5-7min on the beach in Perranporth, just breathing in the fresh salty air. Perranporth has become one of my favorite spots in Cornwall, and so its nice that it isn’t too far away. There were times on the way back where I began to feel it in my legs, but it wasn’t too bad. In the afternoon, Deba, Jonesy, Zane and Myself enjoyed a couple games of tennis, and then we enjoyed some fresh scones and tea at the caravan later in the evening.

Thank the weather this week for clear days and a couple lovely sunsets!
